The Angels are an awesome 14-4 on the road this season and aim to continue their stellar play away from home as they embark on a 10-game road trip. Los Angeles concluded a disappointing 11-game home-stand with just four wins, including Sunday’s 5-2 victory over Tampa Bay that ended a streak of five straight losses. Mike Trout answered an uncharacteristic 0-for-15 skid with a solid three-game stretch that features three hits–including two home runs–and three RBIs while also four runs scored. Outfielder Kole Calhoun is 2-for-21 in his last eight games to drop his batting average to a career-worst .161.
Left-hander Tyler Skaggs (3-3, 2.88 ERA) is taking the mound for Los Angeles on Wednesday. Skaggs has been extremely consistent this season, with only one poor start in nine appearances (six runs allowed in 4.1 innings against Boston on April 18). He has otherwise given up no more than two runs on any occasion and has worked at least 5.0 innings seven times. The 26-year-old most recently faced Tampa Bay last Thursday, when he logged 6.0 innings and allowed only one run on six hits and three walks while striking out seven batters. Due mostly to some awful bullpen performances, the Angels are 0-4 in in Skaggs’ last four outings.
Skaggs has been consistently effective for the Angels this season. Offensively, meanwhile, Trout appears to be back on track. That combination should help L.A. maintain its incredible road form. Los Angeles is 14-6 in its last 20 against starters with WHIPs over 1.30, 14-3 in its last 17 on the road, 7-0 in its last seven on the road against losing opponents, 8-1 in its last nine on the road against opponents with losing home records, and 10-2 in its last 12 on the road against right-handed starters. The Blue Jays are 0-4 in their last four overall, 0-6 in their last six at home, 0-4 in their last four against left-handed starters, 0-5 in their last five against the American League West, 3-7 in Sanchez’s last 10 starts, 1-5 in his last six home starts, and 1-4 in their last five at home against the Angels. Don’t be surprised if those trends continue.
